Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's death the family of Ford, they were looked after by her mother, grandmother, and godparents. When she was a little girl, she struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder. She also experienced anxiety because of the word"association. Ford started acting in her teens, and was part of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few weeks, she realized Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place for her. Ford rather than applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place on her third attempt she applied for and was awarded an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. One of her classmates was Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut when she appeared as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in such programs on television as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Tate would also frequently work in the theatre, and later joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate was first noticed due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
